FAQ

At what age should I start doing general health screening in Singapore?

General health screening can begin as early as 18 years old. According to local guidelines, adults should start regular monitoring of basic health indicators such as blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and baseline metabolic markers from as early as their late teens or early 20s. If you have family history or risk factors (e.g. obesity, smoking, lifestyle-related diseases), it’s wise to start even earlier and screen more frequently.

For healthy adults with no significant risk factors, a full health screening every 1–3 years is often sufficient. However, more frequent checks (e.g. annually or every 1–2 years) may be recommended once you’re in your 40s or beyond, or if you have chronic conditions or family history of diseases.

A comprehensive general health screening usually includes:

  • A physical examination with vital signs (blood pressure, BMI, waist circumference) and lifestyle/medical history review.
  • Blood tests (e.g. blood glucose or HbA1c, lipid profile/cholesterol, liver and kidney function panels) and urine analysis.
  • Additional tests depending on age, risk profile, or package — for example ECG (heart screening), cancer screenings (where indicated), and other organ function assessments.

Your doctor will usually customise the package based on your age, medical history, lifestyle and risk factors.

Fasting may be required for certain tests (like traditional glucose or lipid panels), depending on the provider. However, many modern screening packages in Singapore now use tests such as HbA1c (for long-term glucose control) and non-fasting lipid panels, which may not require fasting.

Yes. If initial screening shows any unusual results (e.g. elevated blood glucose, abnormal lipids, kidney or liver markers, or signs warranting further evaluation), your doctor will typically recommend follow-up. General health screening serves as a first-line early detection tool; follow-up ensures potential issues are properly diagnosed and managed.

Some national screening programmes in Singapore support screenings for certain chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol disorders) and selected cancers for eligible individuals.

However, many private or comprehensive “full-body” screening packages (especially those including advanced tests or wide-ranging blood panels) are not covered and may need to be paid out-of-pocket. Coverage depends on your insurance plan or subsidy eligibility.

Yes. Many chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, early diabetes, or organ dysfunction often develop silently without noticeable symptoms. Regular health screening helps detect these “silent” conditions early, when interventions or lifestyle changes are more effective and complications are easier to avoid.

Choosing the right package depends on your age, health history, lifestyle, and risk factors. A few guidelines:

  • For younger adults (20s–30s) with no major risk factors: a basic screening covering blood pressure, BMI, glucose, lipids may suffice.
  • For middle-aged adults (40s–50s) or those with risk factors (family history, obesity, chronic diseases): a more comprehensive screening with blood panels, organ function tests, and possibly cancer screening may be more appropriate.
  • Always discuss with a doctor, who can recommend which tests matter for your circumstances, and how frequently you should screen.
